Expired Domains names - too hard basket

Recently, I’ve tried my hand at snapping up some expired domains. Years ago, this was an easy exercise as there was not much competition. I used red hot domain names (I just checked it and it looks just as spammy as it did all those years ago) to snap up brilliances.com, jyse.com, and hyperoxic.com. There were probably heaps more on offer back then but I had just finished uni and didn’t have an appreciation for monetising domains as I do now.

After spending a few hours looking through some recently expired lists, I’ve come to the conclusion that expired domains that are of any value will never come back onto the free market. Here’s a few that I was interested in from a recent list:

  • Happenz.com
  • AcademyofChrist.com
  • ArabCharity.com
  • BaseJumpingDeaths.com
  • AfterLaser.com
  • AffiliateToolShop.com

Why anyone would have let these expire, I’ll never understand. If you look at these now, they are all parked by one of those big domaining companies. As explained in one of my earlier posts, these companies have an advantage of being a domain registrar and they take advantage of a loophole in the system where they can ‘taste’ a domain for a few days (5?) and put them back onto the market only if they are deemed to be not profitable. My attempt at registering expired domain names proved to me just how efficient these pros are at getting the good stuff. So for the rest of us, we are just left with their rejects. :(

In reality, there are only three types of domains to register these days

  1. domains that have never been registered before (eg. domain names associated to a new fad - iphones, wii, etc.,)
  2. domains that have been pimped around by all the domainers and thrown back into the available pool as useless trash (eg jerryhuang.com - trash for others, gold for me :D )
  3. domains auctions or direct purchases from the current registered owner (eg. stumbleme.com - yeah… you got it stumble ME hehe )

It is extremely rare to get any of 1 and 2 that are actually of value so that’s why if you stumble across one by chance, you should register it straight away - ie. don’t wait til you’ve got enough for a bulk purchase. Type 3 is the surest way to get a good domain and even though it costs more, I’ve been able to still purchase my domains under their market value (well, my perceived market value anyway ;P)
