I graduated from Uni with a degree in Commerce and Honours in Software Engineering. It took me five years to attain this feat. Technically, it was 4.5 years because I only did 2 subjects in my last semester.
If I was to do uni again, I’d have downgraded my Engineering degree to pure Computer Science and, by overloading by a couple of subjects a semester, I’d have graduated in four years. In actual fact, I did overload and did way more subjects than I was required to but I chose to stay in uni and accumulate more knowledge.
Before commencing my last year, I was offered a full time role at Accenture. I turned them down. Now that I’ve worked for several years, the biggest realisation was how little I learnt during that final year of uni. The opportunity cost of staying in uni an extra year means a years less salary, a year less on the promotion scale, a year less learning the ‘real’ stuff. Sure it’s great to get the diversity that I had with Commerce & Engineering, but 5 years is way too long.
Don’t stay in uni (or anywhere for that matter) longer than you have to.
