High Roller Sues Crown Casion for $30 million

Harry Kakavas, Gold Coast property developer, multi-millionaire, holder of Queenslands most expensive home sold ($18 million in 2004), almost convicted of armed robbery (1999), and now sue-er of Crown Casino. Allegedly, Crown’s conduct was “high-handed”, “in flagrant disregard of the law of the state of Victoria”, and has caused him to loose $30 million.

Harry Kakavas

When I first heard about this, I was thinking, what a load of bollocks! Crown’s just like any other business trying to get their customers to spend more at their shop. You wouldn’t sue a shop if they sold excessive amounts of food to an obviously overweight person. Well.. maybe in the US you would, but not in Australia. The more I read about it, though, the more I think that this guy has a case.

Apparrently, Mr Kakavas, got some sort self-exclusion order to ban himself from Crown. However, Shan Ratnam, vice-president of Crown’s VIP gaming services, got wind that Harry had visited Vegas. With that, Shan gave the order for the Casino’s staff to do ‘what ever was neccessary’ to get Harry back.

He was given:

  • A personally delivered letter from the Casino’s doctors giving him the all clear to gamble again
  • Free food & drinks
  • Free tickets to the Australian Open Tennis
  • Free accomodation
  • Free Limo
  • Free private jet flight down from Queensland to Melbourne
  • Allowed up to $300,000 per hand
  • Given a 20 per cent rebate on losses
  • Given a credit of up to $1.5 million, allegedly sometimes in bags of cash

The sticking point for me is that he had previously self excluded himself from Crown Casino but they obviously preyed on his gambling addiction dragged him in to the lions den for a feeding. Let’s see how the case plays out…

thats life, everyone takes falls in life its just the hight of the fall that varies. my personel experience with the couple, lets not forget his wife, because he does have a partner in crime, money is what really makes these people tick over. With out the driving force for money who would they be. They will do anything, risk anything for the love of money, this risk did not pay off,so they must wear the brunt of their own ambitions.
