Google’s filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday has finally put the real sums to the question we’ve all been asking. Of the $US1.65 billion Google paid for YouTube, how much of it went to its founders?
- Chad Hurley (founder and CEO): 735,319 shares of Google = more than $US345 million
- Steven Chen (founder): 694,087 Google shares = more than $US326 million.
- Jawed Karim (the little known third founder who left the company to finish a computer science degree): 137,443 Google shares = worth more than $US64 million.
- Sequoia Capital XI (invested $US11.5 million in YouTube from November 2005 to April 2006) : 941,027 Google shares = more than $US442 million.
And of course, with success comes copy cats. Here’s a couple of Australian ones trying to make the big time:
