How much money did the YouTube founders make?

Google’s filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday has finally put the real sums to the question we’ve all been asking. Of the $US1.65 billion Google paid for YouTube, how much of it went to its founders?

  • Chad Hurley (founder and CEO): 735,319 shares of Google = more than $US345 million
  • Steven Chen (founder): 694,087 Google shares = more than $US326 million.
  • Jawed Karim (the little known third founder who left the company to finish a computer science degree): 137,443 Google shares = worth more than $US64 million.
  • Sequoia Capital XI (invested $US11.5 million in YouTube from November 2005 to April 2006) : 941,027 Google shares = more than $US442 million.

And of course, with success comes copy cats. Here’s a couple of Australian ones trying to make the big time:
