John Chow: Dot Com Mogul?

I’ve been tracking this guys blog since around the time when I first started Brilliances.com. I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled on to it but some how I did. At the time the JohnChow blog seemed to be a rambling of anything and everything - just your regular everyday blog. There was one difference that stuck with me and was the first reason for me returning to his site. “The Miscellaneous Ramblings of a Dot Com Mogul”. Was this guy really a Dot Com Mogul? I stuck around to see if he would reveal anything to prove the case. Sure enough, a couple of posts came through to confirm that he is a full time internet addict and he does make his living online…

• He owns TheTechZone.com
• He’s never been able to hold down a proper job

… But was John Chow really a Mogul of the Dot Com? I don’t think I’ll really find out as he is unlikely to reveal his full income but if he wasn’t before, he surely is now. From obscurity, the John Chow blog has come from literally no where to become one of the most talked about blogs of 2007. It makes a good case study for why his seemingly nothing special personal blog has been able to achieve a six figure income, $400 reviewme price tag, pagerank of 6, number 2 spot on Google for Make Money Online,… yadi yadi yadi.. the accolades just keep piling on.

A few things I like about John’s work:

• Writing style: You can feel his enthusiasm coming out in his words. He absolutely loves his work.
• Transparency in his earnings: People, including me, just keep logging back to check out how much more he’s earning every month. He’s earnings growth is just massive!
• He’s a great networker. You can tell by the way he communicates. I’m sure he had an existing network of online pals through his TTZ forum (many of whom I reckon helped him get onto the front page of Digg before he got banned) but through his blog, he’s managed to expand that network even more. Just look at his guess bloggers helping him out whilst he was on holidays and the different people on his comments log.
