The Akutagawa Award is the highest honour for new writers and Mieko Kawakami is this years winner.

She’s started her blog in 2003, which explains why she was able to get mieko.jp as her domain name. She used to be a bar maid and a bookstore assistant, and a fledging nobody singer. Now her blog has brought success to her singing career and she averages about 10,000 hits a day. This is really a sign of the times. Blogs are getting so much more mainstream that they are being referenced in traditional print media. In previous generations, this award would have gone to ‘real’ writers and Shintaro Ishihara’s (who won the award way back in 1955) comment sums it all up on how the older folks just don’t get the new media
The egocentric, self-absorbed rambling of the work is unpleasant and intolerable
Yes, that’s what most blogs are mate. Just random, self obsessed ramblings of nothing in particular. There’s no real definite formula for blogging success. It’s so easy to start a blog, but it’s soo hard to hit the big time. The only sure thing is that you should start early so that you can learn from your own blogging experience… I know I have!
