I remember back in 1997 when Huang.com was available for register on NetworkSolutions (back then, the only domain registrar). I didn’t register, thinking what would I do with my surname for a domain name. I went on to register ozwebsites.com and ozshoppingcentre.com and made some small money selling computer parts on stuff.com.au (the pre-eBay Australian auction site) before folding up to concentrate on uni ( I could have been the Aussie Michael Dell! :P ). Fast forward to 2002 when I finished uni and rekindled my internet interests. Domain names were becoming scarce but I managed to grab some hot property with a one word domain (Brilliances.com) and a four letter domain (jyse.com) but the huang.com domain I had wanted a few years back was sadly already taken. The next best thing was jerryhuang.com but I thought, what do you do with your full name for a domain - how silly does jerryhuang_ @ _jerryhuang.com look! So I let it go, started up perpetualhosting.net and made some nice pocket money for a few months before again, closing shop to concentrate on full time work in Hong Kong.
Since passing up on the opportunity to own both huang.com and jerryhuang.com, I’ve been doing a whois lookup a few times a year hoping that the owners would forget to renew or put them up for sale. Good dot com domains have pretty much ALL gone and you have to auction or buy domains off other people nowadays - you’d never be able to do what I did and find dictionary words or four letter domains to regsiter. So, you can see that jerryhuang.com is no longer such the weird domain it was once. Yesterday, when I was renewing my freeserving.com domain, godaddy reported that jerryhuang.com was available … no b*^^%^& way! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Now this was about 1am in the morning so you can excuse me for thinking I was still dreaming. I quickly jumped over the whois.sc and register.com to see if godaddy was try to scam me or something. Indeed, both whois.sc AND register.com reported that the domain was in fact UNavailable. I re-read godaddy’s offer again just to make sure it was an actual offer to buy the domain rather than a back-order or a register-your-interest link. So anyway, to cut the story short, jerryhuang.com was actually available! Maybe godaddy had first digs at it because the previous owner was also a godaddy customer… whatever the reason, I’m really rapt that I finally own my name as my domain!
Wouldn’t it be awesome if Calvin Huang also relinquished his Huang.com domain on the 2008-05-25! :)
For the moment, I’m not sure what to do with my new domain. I might eventually move this whole blog to it and free brilliances for the next brilliant idea. For now, it’ll just redirect to here until I find the time.
