National Do Not Call Register

Australia’s National Do Not Call Register opened up last week. I wanted to sign up but the site was so inundated with hits it crashed on debut. Fancy that. I had another go at registering again today but first I thought it be good to read the fine print…

Can market researchers still call?

Yes. Market and social researchers will still be permitted to call when conducting opinion polling and standard questionnaire-based research.

What da?

What if I have already consented to receive calls from a business?

If you have already consented to receive calls from a business, such as a bank where you have an account, they may still call you. This also applies if it can be reasonably inferred that you have consented to receive calls from a business through an established business relationship.

reasonably inferred??

The register comes into effect next month and offending businesses can get fined up to a million dollars. I’m not too convinced at how this is going to work and how it’s going to be enforced. Think I’ll just wait and see before registering for more garbage online.

Why don’t they just have a ‘Do Call Me’ Register??? A bit too obvious, eh?
