Two instant internet millionaire ideas, born within a couple of months of each other…

12/07/2005 One Red Paper Clip: Kyle MacDonald has this stupendous idea that he can trade an ordinary red paper clip for a house. From paper clip to fish pen, to door knob, stove, generator,… a van,… recording contract, afternoon with Alice Cooper, downgrading to a snow globe (??) so he could accept a ‘trade’ for a movie contract, and then finally… the house! Brilliant! Now he’s sold his story to just about every news channel, writing a book, will have his own movie, and I’d guess, is now a millionaire many times over.

26/08/2005 Million Dollar Homepage: Alex Tew decides to sell out 1,000,000 pixels at $1 each. I’ve got no idea why anyone would want to cram their little logo amongst hundreds of other logos all squashed in one page. But that’s probably why I’m still looking for a good idea and Alex is rolling it in and laughing all the way to the internet bank. After selling it to his brothers and a few friends, he makes enough for a press release that gets picked up by CNN, and the rest is history. With an unsatiable apetite for anything unique, the internet advertisers swarmed in and in the first four weeks, he sold more than 300,000 pixels … at $1 each!

Of these two, Alex’s Million Dollar Homepage gets my pick. It seems he really thought it through, knew what he was selling, and put in the hard yards to market his product. Kyle, on the other hand, seemed to have been driven more by luck, depending on others generosity to get him through.

In the mean time, I’ve had enough of reading all these get rich books for the time being. The common theme in all the books have been drilled into my brain already. Must have passion, must have a plan, persistance to carry the idea through, must build a valuable asset that I can sell rather than just selling my time, and must take risks… calculated risks. It’s high time I get my head into gear for the-next-big-idea! If it were only just that simple…
