Salary levels by Industry (2007)

Just found a neat section on MyCareer.com.au that discloses some salary information by industry and state. A couple of interesting things to note

  1. A graduate can get anywhere between $32,290 and $116,708 - that’s $32k for arts graduate and $116k for the super nerdy, dean’s honour list, investment banker. From memory, IT grads are between $40 - $60K, and management consultants get $80 - $100k plus a $10 grand sign up bonus so you can rock up to work in a nice suit.
  2. If you don’t make it in the corporate ladder, try self employment. Whilst the starting ’salary’ is only $20k, it has the most upside and is the highest paid ‘profession’ at $313,333 a year. For me, it’s almost a waste of time if you spend too long chasing the promotion path in most companies - Map out your exit strategy right from the onset and start thinking about how you’re going to make some real dough running your own business
  3. You don’t need to be nerdy to make money. The Mining, Oil, Gas sector has the highest starting salary ($55,286), the highest average ($123,664), and is only beaten by the Lawyers and Self Employed when it comes to max earnings. Seriously, consider an apprenticeship in plumbing - I’ve heard they can make up to $1500 a day! With their charge out rates and severe shortage of tradees, I’m not surprised!
