Sealand is a former WWII fort, boasting 550 square metres platform of steel, uninterrupted 360 degree sea view, complete privacy (only accessible by helicopter or boat), and a self-proclaimed royal family. It is just 11km outside of England so it is beyond the 3 mile rule and therefore outside of British Government control. In 1967, a former British Army major ,Paddy Roy Bates, began occupying the territory and a few years later introduced a flag, national anthem, the gold & silver Sealand dollar, and even passports!
After a 40 year reign, the Bates have decided ”perhaps it is time for some rejuvenation”. For $10,000,000+ Sealand dollars (equivalent to the US dollar) you can have your little country and a free tax haven! wow! :)
I wonder what would happen if the Queen of England decided to sell her country. How much would that fetch? Imagine the ensuing auction bidding war between Bush and Osama - hahaha!
