Zazz.com.au: Australianising an existing US business model

Have you heard of woot.com? It’s an online store that sells really cheap stuff with a twist - sales start midnight and last 24 hours or until sold out. They started out just off loading their excess stock but obviously everyone loves a bargain so now they just get a commission off selling goods straight from the manufacturers… straight from the manufacturers and straight to their 500,000+ members! They now own the ‘w00t’ catch cry and are the cause of many sleep deprived Americans staying up just to see the next bargain.

Well, when you see a good business model take off in the states (or any other country for that matter), you copy it and make a killing in the Aussie market. Sadly, someone else has beaten me to it. Two Melbourne guys, Alain Sarfati and Alfred Milgrom, have launched Zazz.com.au in 2006.

zazz

Their site is powered by osCommerce, phpBB, and uses eWay as their payment gateway. Zazz is pretty much an exact rip off of woot except Australianised (or de-Americanized). Not sure who Alain is but Alfred is a veteran software developer and one cashed up mongul. Heard of Melbourne House? They used to develop games. ‘Used’ to because they merged with Infogrames and then were bought over by Atari - yes Atari! Now he owns another software development company named Smarty Pants that specialises in Educational stuff for kids - How am I supposed to compete with a CV like that?

Well anyway, some else has already copied the copy. It’s called ‘catch of the day‘.
